The main reason why Christians celebrate Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ which is, in other words, an event that happened over 2,000 years ago in Bethlehem. Different cultures and different dominions celebrate Christmas in a different way.
However, the unifying factor here is the birth of Jesus Christ. His birth was a good news to the world. In fact, the angel who brought the news of his birth said that (Luke 2:10-11) ‘’ I bring you the good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the Town of David a Savior has been born to you: He is the messiah, the Lord’’.
In other words, the word Christmas comes from the mass of the Christ. This mass is sometimes known as the Communion or Eucharist.
Historically, the Christ mass is the only one that was allowed to take place after sunset and before sunrise. For this reason, people had it during the night. This is where we got the word Christ mass shortened to Christmas.
Most of the Christians today cannot imagine of anything greater or lower than celebrating Christmas on 25th December. However, you have to note that for the first three centuries, the birth of Jesus Christ wasn’t celebrated at all. This day was firstly announced officially from 336AD to honor his death.
Although the bible doesn’t mention anything about his birth date, people have for this long assumed that he was born on 25thDecember.
The bible doesn’tmention anything about his birth date and for this reason, we probably think it might be the accurate date or maybe not.
Most people will participate on celebrating this day, by sharing Gifts, by meeting friends and family members and also by sharing Merry Christmas Wishes but not many of them will tell the reason behind this. In fa,ct most of the Christians will say that we are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. However, as I have already mentioned above, there’s a probability that Jesus wasn’t born on 25th December.
The true gift of this day is Jesus Christ. That is what people celebrate. The birth of a Messiah but not just his birth but also his deeds to the humanity. Just bear in mind that today’s big idea why we celebrate Christmas is to thank God for the gift of a savior that he gave to us.
The sole purpose of Celebrating Christmas is to worship and thank God for his gift to the humanity. People always pray to God to give them the courage to accept this gift.
