Why are Speed Signs and Message Signs Used?

Speed signs have now been in use for decades, and their purpose of use is very clear. They indicate the speed limit within which any automobile must run on a specific road or lane. Signs such as radar speed limit signs are used especially to track the speed limit of automobiles passing by and ensuring that safety is maintained through obeying prescribed speed limit.

Since most drivers have the tendency to talk on their cell phones or pay less attention to the road, they get easily distracted. This leads to all sorts of accidents and mishaps which eventually lead to fatal injuries and deaths. To avoid such hazardous situations, these speed signs use their speed display technology to inform drivers about the speed that they should be driving in.

Radar speed limit signs have a number of other names such as speed display signs, your speed sings, driver feedback signs among others. Ever wondered how radar speed signs function. They use something that/s known as the feedback loop theory. This technology has a big average for many miles, and the process for installation is relatively easy. Since they also work on batteries, they offer the option of running without big secondary cabinets that tend to be quite a burden on poles. They are also very user-friendly and light weight thus eliminating the need for much manpower. You would only need one lift truck to install a radar sign on a street light pole.

Now, VMS signs which are variable message signs operate on digital technology and compliment radar speed signs very well. Where radar speed signs determine a driver’s speed a variable message sign informs a driver about the status of road conditions lying ahead of him. This helps prepare the driver for what lies ahead.

Say, an accident has occurred a mile away from where the driver is currently located, the VMS sign will inform the driver about such an incident and will give options to the driver whether to turn back or change lanes and take a different route. Moreover, situations such as road block, congested traffic scenarios or road maintenance activities are informed as well so that the driver can take measures to avoid such routes.

All of this information is conveyed to drivers on real time basis and are operated through a manned control center via a local network or radio link. The ITS which is the Intelligent Transportation Systems rely heavily on VMS signs to ensure smooth and safe flow of traffic.

Variable message signs are a real stress reliever for drivers since they reduce road-related stress by helping drivers make the right choices at the right time. Imagine the amount of time a driver can save if he gets to know about traffic conditions lying ahead of him. It helps a major deal during rush hour when children have to reach school, and office goers have to reach office on time. Moreover, it can alert drivers to leave a way for ambulances that need to rush to specific locations during emergency situations. The possibilities for control and coordination are innumerable when the radar signs and variable message signs are used together.
